25th of April Bridge
25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril)
The 25th of April Bridge is one of Lisbon’s most iconic structures, instantly recognizable for its striking red color and resemblance to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Spanning the Tagus River, it connects the capital city of Lisbon to the municipality of Almada on the southern bank.
Inaugurated in 1966, the bridge was originally named after Portugal’s dictator, Salazar. Following the peaceful Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974 — which marked the end of the dictatorship — it was renamed in honor of that historic day.
Measuring over 2.2 kilometers (1.4 miles) in length, the bridge carries both road and rail traffic, making it a vital transport link in the Lisbon metropolitan area. It is considered one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe.
Beyond its engineering significance, the 25th of April Bridge stands as a powerful symbol of freedom and transformation in Portuguese history, linking the past with the present in both a literal and symbolic sense.
