Alcoutim Castle
Alcoutim Castle is a medieval fortress located on the banks of the Guadiana River, right across from the Spanish village of Sanlúcar de Guadiana. Built in the 13th century during the reign of King Dinis, it played a strategic role in defending Portugal’s southern border.
The castle has an irregular layout, adapted to the natural terrain, with stone walls and a keep (main tower). In the 17th century, it was modified to accommodate artillery, reflecting the military needs of the time during conflicts with Spain.
Today, visitors can walk along the walls, enjoy stunning views of the river and the Spanish side, and explore the Archaeology Museum, which houses artifacts from prehistory to the modern period. The location offers a blend of history, architecture, and scenic beauty, making it a must-visit in the Algarve’s quieter countryside.
